Ego Cordless Hedge Trimmers Recalled Due to Laceration Hazard
A trigger can fail to rebound, causing the tool to operate unexpectedly, posing the risk of a laceration
Chervon North America, the parent company of Ego, has recalled about 85,000 cordless (also called electric or battery) hedge trimmers. The rear switch trigger can fail to rebound after being pressed, which can cause the tool to activate unexpectedly, posing a laceration hazard. The company has received 34 U.S. reports of the trimmer starting unexpectedly, including eight reports of lacerations that required stitches, according to a release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumer Reports hasn't tested the recalled model but has tested a newer version of this hedge trimmer, the Ego HT2411. Our tested model wasn't included in the recall and our engineers did not observe any safety hazards during the course of our testing.
The recall: About 85,000 Ego cordless hedge trimmers in the U.S. and approximately 4,000 in Canada. The recall involves Ego HT2410 cordless hedge trimmers sold with or without a battery and charger. Only models made from September 2017 through March 2019 are included in the recall. The date code and model number can both be found on the product housing near the handle. The risk: The rear switch trigger can fail to rebound after being pressed, which can cause the tool to activate unexpectedly, posing a laceration hazard.
Incidents/injuries: Chervon has received 34 reports of the tool unexpectedly turning on, including eight instances of lacerations that required stitches.
Where and when sold: Home improvement and hardware stores, including acehardware.com, acmetools.com, and homedepot.com, from September 2017 through March 2020 for between $150 and $220.
The remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled hedge trimmer and contact Chervon for a free repair of the trigger switch.
