‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Proves It’s a Horror Classic | Reviews | quovadisnewspaper.com
Chainsaw
“The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1974) is a must-watch horror movie during the spooky season. This is the first out of nine films in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise and an iconic one loved by many, garnering a large fandom and having games created based on it. The ruthless and chainsaw-wielding maniac, Leatherface, is the face of the franchise and a figure known by generations. Directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Kim Henkel and Hooper himself, the film stars Marilyn Burns as Sally Hardesty, Allen Danziger as Jerry,
Paul A. Partain as Franklin Hardesty, William Vail as Kirk, Teri McMinn as Pam, Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface and more.
The film is not based on a true story, however, it is inspired by true events, according to Screen Rant. The biggest inspiration for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is the killer, Edward Theodore Gein “Ed Gein,” also known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul. According to Biography, Gein was born on Aug. 27, 1906, and was a grave robber believed to be connected to other unsolved cases. A collection of human organs, fashioned clothing and accessories made from body parts were discovered in an investigation of Gein’s home. “He admitted to digging up numerous corpses in order to cut off body parts, practice necrophilia, and fashion masks and suits out of skin to wear around the home,” according to Biography. This terrifying aspect is apparent in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The synopsis of this film is a group of five friends — Sally, Jerry, Franklin, Kirk and Pam are on a road trip in Texas, to visit a grave. On their way, they encounter a strange hitchhiker who gives them an unpleasant experience. Eventually, they stumble upon a house, not knowing the terrors that lie inside of it. This film incorporates the popular concept of a group of friends going out into an isolated area, only to be taunted and hunted by a formidable killer or monstrosity. This trope is present in many slasher films and is a personal favorite of mine. The range of characters and diverse personality makes it relatable to viewers.
