Chainsaw Man Reveals The True Power Of Its New Strongest Devil

Apr 09, 2023

Chainsaw Man has finally revealed the powers of its strongest devil in part 2 and they have major implications for the rest of the series.

Warning! Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man #131!

The Famine Devil's powers are finally revealed in Chainsaw Man's latest chapter, and they have major implications for the story going forward. Mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto has been setting up the Famine Devil as Part 2's Makima, with mysterious but incredibly strong abilities and the goal to control the growth of the Part's main character Asa Mitaka. Her newly revealed powers are very appropriate for this role.

In Chapter #131, translated by Amanda Haley, it is revealed that the Famine Devil has been controlling the Falling Devil, causing it to hunt down Asa. When Nayuta, the new Control Devil, asks her why she did this, Fami explains that Nostradamus' prophecy predicting the arrival of an ultimate terror and the end of the world is coming true, but the War Devil could potentially stop it. The Famine Devil can turn starved entities into her pawns, so she wanted to starve the War Devil in the stomach of a Devil so she could control her. This revelation both puts many of the previous events of this part in context and raises some important questions about the limits of her powers, especially concerning the Primal Devils.

The Primal Devils are the most powerful Devils in Hell, each stemming from a deep-set human fear like Darkness and Falling. While they are incredibly powerful, Chainsaw Man has shown that they can be defeated, such as when Makima beat the Darkness Devil in Part 1. Despite this precedent, it is still extremely surprising that Fami could actually use one as a pawn even if it was starving. Given that the Famine Devil previously also orchestrated the return of the past Chainsaw Man enemy Eternity Devil to trap Denji and Asa in an Aquarium, it is likely that she can control most of the devils in Hell, many of which are starving due to the lack of a human food supply. Given this incredible power level, it is extremely worrying that she doesn't think she can defeat the approaching catastrophe on her own.

It is even more surprising that Fami believes that Asa and Yoru can defeat the upcoming threat. While the Control and Famine Devils have both shown off incredible powers, the War Devil's abilities have been nowhere near the same scale. Part of this could be due to Asa's inexperience with these abilities and her general lack of connection to things that she can turn into weapons. Fami certainly seems to be implying that with a better application of her powers, Asa could rival the strength of the starved Primal Devils Famine has at her command, which is a major bombshell. This comment also cements Asa's role as the main hero of Chainsaw Man Part 2, despite Denji's continued presence in the story.

It is unclear if the Famine Devil has further powers beyond the ability to control the starved, but it is certain that Chainsaw Man Part 2 will be exploring both her and Asa's powers in more detail as it approaches the arrival of its ultimate antagonist. This chapter's revelations though already provide plenty of questions and fodder for theories surrounding the full extent of all the Horsemen's powers. Hopefully, Chainsaw Man Part 2 continues to explore the full extent of both Fami and Asa's abilities as they could end up being the most powerful in the series.
