An adult live-action parody film of Chainsaw Man reportedly sells more Blu-ray copies than Studio MAPPA's massively popular anime adaptation.

Chainsaw Man's notorious live-action adult parody film reportedly sold more Blu-ray copies than Studio MAPPA's official anime adaptation.

Anime YouTube Chibi Reviews (@ChibiReviews) posted an image to social media that claimed Chainsaw Man's 18+ live-action adaptation allegedly sold 8,600 Blu-ray copies in the first week following its April 28 release. The reported sales of the two-hour adult parody film notably eclipsed sales of the Chainsaw Man anime's Blu-ray release, which only managed to move 1,735 copies within the same time frame.

Fans were quick to share their amusement with the live-action adult parody, with several commenters jokingly asking for the name or links to where they might find the 18+ film in question. Some users also showcased the adult film's absurd setting by posting screenshots and clips of Gorota, who was the parody's humorous take on Denji's beloved partner, Pochita. Others additionally expressed their surprise regarding the Chainsaw Man parody's Blu-ray sales and how it nearly quintupled the anime adaptation's sales figures. One commenter attributed the gap to the enormous price tag of the complete Chainsaw Man Blu-ray series, with the complete set of the 12-episode anime costing roughly $310.

Based on mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto's massively popular manga series of the same name, Chainsaw Man is set in a world where devils are manifested from humanity's collective fears. The story follows Denji, a young orphan who fuses with his pet devil dog Pochita and subsequently inherits the powers of the Chainsaw Devil. The anime adaptation received overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans and critics alike, with audiences praising Chainsaw Man's smooth animation, colorful cast and unique blend of action and horror. Despite the success of the series, Studio MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka still claimed Chainsaw Man fell short of the company's expectations due to its weak Blu-ray sales.

At the time of writing, Studio MAPPA has yet to announce a second season for Chainsaw Man, leaving some fans to worry about the adaptation's future. The fandom was particularly concerned regarding the low sales of Chainsaw Man's Blu-ray copies, which fans believed might discourage the studio from investing more resources into the adaptation or even cancel it altogether. Studio MAPPA also notably did not confirm Chainsaw Man Season 2 during its anticipated anime showcase event, MAPPA Stage 2023, leaving audiences anxious and wondering when or if MAPPA planned to return to the series.

Chainsaw Man is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
